North east Victoria rewards curiosity. From eucalypt forests and granite hills to high-country plains and river valleys, north east Victoria invites you to slow down and reconnect with nature. Here we’ve gathered some of our favourite places close enough for a day trip and rich enough to remember.

Walks & lookouts

Pack a thermos, lace up and follow the quiet paths that wind through National parks and valleys. The reward is always stillness and a view worth the pause.

Paradise Falls, King Valley
A gentle forest walk leading to cascading falls framed by sandstone cliffs. Best after rain. Arrive early to hear the magpies before the crowds.

Mount Samaria State Park
Choose from shaded loops or climb to the summit through peppermint gums and granite outcrops. The views stretch across the valley — a perfect half-day wander.

Warby–Ovens National Park
Wander through open red gums, rocky ridges, and wildflower trails. Short walks or longer hikes all reveal the quiet beauty of Victoria’s high country.

Mount Glenrowan
A moderate climb to panoramic views across the Wangaratta plains. Linger at the top for sunrise or late-afternoon light.

Powers Lookout
A short stroll to dramatic lookouts over the King Valley. Pack a simple picnic and watch the sun dip behind the ranges.

Water & wellness

Cool rivers, still lakes, and places made for pausing.

Lake Sambell, Beechworth
A calm lake on the edge of town — swim from the shore, wander the loop trail, or book the floating sauna for a slow, restorative ritual that blends heat, water and stillness.

King River
The King River winds its way through the valley, offering countless places to swim, paddle and pause under the shade of old gums. These are some local favourites for a refreshing dip:

Moyhu: At the crossroads in town, take the Moyhu–Meadow Creek Road. About a kilometre down on the left is a beautiful bend in the river with a tree swing and deep pools perfect for cooling off on warm days.

Lake William Hovell: Fringed by bushland and backed by mountains, this lake offers calm waters for swimming, canoeing, or casting a line. Grassed picnic areas and shady trees make it a peaceful, secluded spot to linger for the afternoon.

Cheshunt: Just before the Cheshunt Store, cross the bridge and pull off to the left. You’ll find shallow areas and deeper pools surrounded by grass and shade — an easy walk from the store if you fancy lunch or a cool drink after your swim.

Each spot has its own rhythm — some quiet, some full of laughter and splashes but all share the same feeling of country summer simplicity.

Cycling & trails

North east Victoria is a cyclist’s dream — gentle rail trails, mountain descents, gravel roads, and country lanes that unfold through vineyards and valleys. Whether you’re here for a leisurely ride or a serious climb, the region caters to every pace and passion.

Murray to Mountains Rail Trail
Australia’s premier rail trail weaves through the high country, linking Beechworth, Myrtleford, Bright, and beyond. Smooth sealed paths, gentle gradients, and scenic rest stops make it ideal for relaxed riders. Start with a short section from Everton to Beechworth, or make a day of it with café stops and winery detours.

Gravel & valley rides
For those who prefer quiet backroads and a touch of adventure, the King Valley and its surrounds offer exceptional gravel routes — from rolling river flats to alpine climbs. Locals love the mix of forest tracks, vineyard views, and the feeling of endless space.

Alpine ascents
Seasoned riders can take on iconic climbs such as Mount Buffalo, Mount Hotham, or Falls Creek — all within reach for a day trip. The reward? Crisp air, switchback curves, and panoramic high-country vistas that make every climb worth it.

Family & leisure rides
If you’re after something gentler, explore short, shaded rides through towns like Milawa, Moyhu, and Whitfield. Pack a picnic, stop at a cellar door or farm gate, and ride at your own rhythm.
